    Book details

In this collection of essays from "Natural History" magazine, Gould has once again applied biographical perspectives to the illumination of key scientific concepts and their history, ranging from the discovery of the new scourge of syphilis by Fracastoro in the 16th century and Isabelle Duncan's 19th-century attempt at reconciling scripture and paleontology to Freud's weird speculations about human phylogeny and recent creationist attacks on the study of evolution. The essays illuminate and elucidate the puzzles and paradoxes great and small that have fuelled the enterprise of science and opened our eyes to a world of unexpected wonders.

"Gems of evolutionary and natural-history wisdom" (Steven Rose Sunday Times)"Not only one of the finest scientific minds of the later 20th century, but also one of its greatest polymaths... A wonderfully eclectic collection-a fine introduction to a brilliant mind" (The Times)"It is hard to think of any one else with this combination of polymathic ability and of sheer cheek...original and controversial...quintessentially revealing" (Spectator)"This is not a book for the bedside table. It sets the mind racing too wildly for sleep" (New Scientist)"High in emotion and rich in historical perspective-one of our most gifted and productive science writers... He pioneered an explosion in the popularisation of science but has never been bettered in the process" (Robin McKie Observer) --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

This is a brilliant tour through the central themes of natural history and biology. Hence, Darwin and evolution feature heavily. You can't read Gould and simply learn of the descent of man. No, instead he takes a (not so) random walk telling human interest stories (like the coming of his grandparents to America, baseball, Karl Marx etc) until he arrives logically, somehow, to the coup de grace and proceeds to nail his scientific topic on its head. You feel enlightened at the end of it. If there's one fault (at least to me) it's that Gould tries too hard to accommodate the religious right. Living in Europe, I'm less gracious.

This truly is the ultimate (as in last) collection of Gould's essays from nature. Is it his best? Kind of hard to say. I found it much more emotionally stirring than many of the previous collections and I definitely see that as positive. (Gould has always been more or less personal in his essays as a good popular writer should but this time he's kicked it up a notch.) The problem with rating essay collections is that they generally span such a large range of subjects, especially true in Gould's case, so there will always be some essays that don't interest some readers. No matter, Gould has a flair for taking apparently mundane topics dealing with things you never knew existed and making them interesting.Bottom line, if you've read any of Gould's essay collections before and liked them, then this will be right up your alley. If you've read nothing of Gould's then this is as good a place as any to start.
